Filament Maker X10 – Material Compatibility
This article explains which materials can be processed, the requirements for input material, important considerations when using additives, and the spool dimensions supported by the X10.
The Filament Maker X10 is designed to process a wide range of thermoplastic polymers for filament production.
This article explains which materials can be processed, the requirements for input material, important considerations when using additives, and the spool dimensions supported by the Filament Maker X10.
⚠️ Important: Material compatibility does not depend on melting temperature alone. The specific grade, formulation, additives, moisture content, and other material properties can significantly affect extrudability and final filament quality.

Tip: The list above is not exhaustive. Other thermoplastics may also be processable depending on their specific material properties and grade.
Material Grade Matters
Two materials with the same polymer type can behave very differently during extrusion.
For example, different grades of the same polymer may have different:
- Melt flow characteristics
- Processing temperatures
- Viscosity
- Thermal stability
- Additive content
- Moisture sensitivity
For this reason, always check the Technical Data Sheet (TDS) supplied by the material manufacturer before processing a new material.
The TDS should be used to determine the recommended processing conditions for the specific material grade.
Input Material Size
The maximum recommended particle size for material entering the Filament Maker X10 is:
4 mm maximum diameter
Material particles larger than 4 mm may result in:
- Insufficient melting
- Inconsistent feeding
- Poor extrusion
- Material bridging
- Clogging
Recommended Material Forms
The Filament Maker X10 can process material supplied in forms such as:
- Pellets
- Shredded material
- Ground material
- Powder
Regardless of the material form, particles should not exceed 4 mm in diameter.
Using Recycled Materials
Recycled and reclaimed thermoplastics can be processed when they are suitable for extrusion and compatible with the Filament Maker X10.
Before processing recycled material, consider:
- Particle size
- Material identification
- Contamination
- Moisture content
- Previous thermal history
- Degradation
- Presence of incompatible polymers
⚠️ Important: Do not place polluted or contaminated material into the hopper. Contaminated material can damage the extrusion system and may create hazardous emissions.
Colorants
The Filament Maker X10 supports the addition of colorants to the main polymer to produce colored filament.
When using a colorant:
- Confirm that the colorant is suitable for polymer extrusion.
- Check its recommended processing temperature.
- Follow the manufacturer's recommended dosage.
- Ensure the colorant is compatible with the base polymer.
- Monitor the extrusion process for changes in material behavior.
💡 Tip: Adding an additive can change the flow and processing characteristics of the base polymer. Process optimization may therefore be required.
Inert Additives
The Filament Maker X10 can potentially process thermoplastic materials containing inert additives such as:
- Metals
- Minerals
- Glass
- Ceramics
- Other fillers
However, these materials must be processed carefully.
The addition of particles can affect:
- Extrudability
- Screw wear
- Nozzle wear
- Filament surface quality
- Filament diameter
- Material flow
⚠️ Important: Contact a 3devo before processing any percentage of additive material.
Materials That Must NOT Be Processed
The following materials are STRICTLY PROHIBITED from being inserted into the Filament Maker X10 hopper:
🚫 Liquids
🚫 Corrosive materials
🚫 Polluted or contaminated materials
🚫 Flammable materials
🚫 Toxic materials
Processing these materials can result in:
- Irreversible machine damage
- Serious safety hazards
- Hazardous emissions
- Voided warranty
🚫 DO NOT INSERT THESE MATERIALS INTO THE HOPPER.
Processing Unlisted Materials
If a polymer or additive is not specifically listed in this article, processing it is done at the user's own risk.
Before attempting to process an unlisted material, investigate:
- Melting/processing temperature
- Decomposition temperature
- Melt viscosity
- Thermal stability
- Material safety
- Required ventilation
- Additive compatibility
💡 Recommendation: If you are unsure whether a material is suitable for the X10, contact 3devo before processing it.
Material Spool Compatibility
The Filament Maker X10 supports spools within the following dimensions.
| Specification | Maximum / Required |
|---|---|
| Maximum spool outer diameter | 300 mm |
| Maximum spool width | 100 mm |
| Maximum spool weight | 3 kg |
| Spool core diameter | 49–55 mm |
Spool Dimensions
The spool must remain within all four specifications to ensure proper installation and operation.
Spool Diameter
The maximum outer spool diameter is: 300 mm
A larger spool may interfere with the machine or spooling mechanism.
Spool Width
The maximum supported spool width is: 100 mm
Spool Weight
The maximum supported spool weight is: 3 kg
Do not exceed the maximum spool weight.
Spool Core Diameter
The spool core must have an internal diameter between: 49 mm and 55 mm
This dimension is important for correct mounting on the spool holder.
Quick Material Checklist
Before loading a new material, check the following:
- Is it a thermoplastic polymer?
- Is its required processing temperature within the X10's 0–450°C heating capability?
- Have you checked the manufacturer's Technical Data Sheet?
- Are the particles 4 mm or smaller?
- Is the material free from contamination?
- Is the material free from liquids or corrosive substances?
- Is the material safe to process at the required temperature?
- Have you checked the material's SDS/MSDS?
- Is adequate ventilation available?
- If additives are present, have they been verified as suitable?
If you cannot answer these questions confidently, do not load the material into the machine.
Material Safety
⚠️ Always research a material before processing it.
Different polymers can release different VOCs, ultra-fine particles, and decomposition products when heated.
Before extrusion, review:
- Safety Data Sheet (SDS/MSDS)
- Technical Data Sheet (TDS)
- Recommended processing temperature
- Decomposition temperature
- Recommended ventilation
- Additive information
