DevoStick: How to solve Feeding Issues

This article details an unusual but efficient way of solving feeding issues with the Filament Maker.

Note:

The Filament Maker has sufficient safety features and designs that protect the user and the machine. However, we also understand that it is a machine used for experimentation, research and development, and this sometimes opens up possibilities for other uses.

The situation

If there's a reoccurring and frustrating feeding issue, there are some ways to help fix the problem. Having a Feeder is a great option to help with feeding and avoid ratholing or bridging. Read more about Material Feeding issues in our Filament Diameter Troubleshooting article (see point 10).

Additionally, we sometimes recommend adding pressure to the material by using a rectangular ended wooden stick to push down on the feeding material.

When to use

This unusual method is most commonly recommended when using shredded or powder material. When using materials in these forms, it's common to encounter feeding issues especially as the small particles allow for a lot of air in between them. Pushing down on them condenses the material and ensures added pressure in the flow.

What to use

A rectangular ended piece of wood. We like to call it the DevoStick. It's not pretty, but it works.

For safety, we recommend using a piece of wood that has an end which is close to, but bigger than the size of the opening, so it doesn't slip in.

Again, for safety, we recommend wood, because if it does slip in, and the screw catches bits of the piece of wood, it will shred it and extrude it with no damage to the machine.

Here it is in action.
