"Extruder motor thermistor is not connected"

This error message pops up if there’s a connection issue with the “thermistor”. Find out what could cause this and how to fix it.

Thermistor

The word "thermistor" is a combination of the words "thermal" and "resistor". In the Filament Maker, this is a black cable that is located between the main circuit board (PCB) called "DevoBoard", and the motor that rotates the screw inside the machine.

This is the thermistor end (seen in left picture) that is inserted into the motor (seen in right picture). The error message is very simply an issue with the connection of this cable.

Reasons for error

Disconnected

Through use or movement of the Filament Maker, the thermistor cable became disconnected from the DevoBoard and/or the motor.

Missing cable

There is a low possibility that the Filament Maker does not have a thermistor at all. This can be due to a new motor and gearbox unit being shipped without the thermistor being included. If such a setback occurs, 3devo of course can send you a new one. Please Contact Support to order one.

Solution

Luckily, in both cases, the issue can be easily fixed.

Whether the thermistor is disconnected or you just got shipped a new one, you will need an adhesive to ensure that the connection is secure. We recommend the following product.

Bison Siliconenkit High Temp - Zwart

This is the recommended adhesive to reconnect and secure the thermistor inside the motor.

Steps:

  1. Apply a small amount of adhesive to the top of the thermistor. This looks likes a metallic pin.
  2. Insert the pin into the hole found in the motor. Make sure the pin reaches all the way to the end and can go no further.
  3. This adhesive needs at least one full day to dry. Please wait out the full day before switching on your machine.
