Filament Maker X10 – How to Purge the Extrusion System

Learn how to purge the extrusion system after an extrusion experiment and prepare the X10 for the next experiment.

Purge After Each Experiment

After every extrusion experiment, the machine should be left in a safe and suitable condition for the next experiment.

It is recommended to purge the machine with DevoClean MidTemp after each extrusion experiment.

Follow the purge procedure described in this article.

⚠️ Hot material: The extrusion system and purged material can become extremely hot. Do not touch the nozzle or extruded material directly.

Prepare Before Purging

Before starting an extrusion experiment, make sure you have sufficient purging material available.

This is particularly important when transitioning between different materials.

Purging Procedure

It is recommended to purge the machine with DevoClean MidTemp after each extrusion experiment.

Follow the detailed procedure in Purge the Extrusion System.

💡 Tip: Always make sure you have sufficient purging material available before starting an extrusion experiment.

Never Run the Machine Empty

🔥 Warning: Never attempt to operate the extruder without sufficient material. Running the machine dry can damage the internal components.

Extrusion Process – Quick Checklist

Before starting:

  • Confirm the material is compatible with the Filament Maker X10.
  • Confirm the material is clean and dry.
  • Ensure particles are no larger than 4 mm.
  • Identify the material currently inside the machine.
  • Select the correct material or purging preset.
  • Ensure sufficient purging material is available.
  • Install the extrusion bib.
  • Wear the required PPE.

During extrusion:

  • Maintain a consistent material feed.
  • Never leave the machine unattended.
  • Allow sufficient time for parameter changes to take effect.
  • Monitor the extrusion for clogging or irregularities.
  • Stabilize extrusion for at least 5 minutes before proceeding.
  • Guide the material correctly through the cooling path.
  • Monitor the filament and puller speed.
  • Start spooling only once the filament is stable.

After extrusion:

  • Stop spooling when the spool is full.
  • Remove the finished spool safely.
  • Purge the extrusion system.
  • Never leave the machine empty.

💡 Tip: Always make sure you have sufficient purging material available before starting an extrusion experiment.
