Filament Maker X10 – Purging the Extrusion System

Purging cleans the inside of the extruder by feeding dedicated purging material through the screw, barrel, and nozzle. It pushes previously processed polymer out of the extrusion system and removes residual material.

Purging is recommended after every extrusion experiment.

Recommended Purging Materials

Recommended materials include:

  • PLA – 4043D by NatureWorks
  • HDPE – KS 10100 UE by Dow
  • DevoClean MidTemp – Dyna-Purge D2 by Dyna-Purge

For the purging procedure:

Purging material Recommended temperature
DevoClean MidTemp 190–320°C
DevoClean HighTemp Above 300°C

⚠️ Important: When using DevoClean HighTemp, the final purge must transition to DevoClean MidTemp.

Prepare for Purging
  1. Prepare approximately 350 g of suitable purging material.
  2. Temporarily turn OFF the hopper sensor.
  3. Remove the conveyor while keeping the cables connected.
  4. Install the extrusion bib.
  5. Turn the cooling fans away from the nozzle or disable them through the machine settings.

⚠️ Warning: Turning off the hopper sensor does not allow the machine to run empty. Always monitor the material level.

Purging Process
  1. Confirm the machine temperature is suitable for the current material and purging material.
  2. Allow the hopper to run almost empty.
  3. Add approximately 60 g of purging material.
  4. Allow the hopper to run almost empty again.
  5. Add approximately 200 g of purging material.
  6. Monitor the material exiting the nozzle.
  7. Adjust the screw speed if necessary.

A screw speed of 5–10 RPM is recommended as a safe purging range for all materials.

⚠️ Important: Never allow the machine to run completely empty.

Complete the Purge

Continue purging until the material exiting the nozzle appears clean and pure.

The process typically takes approximately 15–25 minutes, although the duration can vary.

If DevoClean HighTemp was used:

  1. Complete the HighTemp purge.
  2. Transition to DevoClean MidTemp.
  3. Repeat the purge using DevoClean MidTemp.

Finally:

  1. Open the machine settings.
  2. Turn the hopper sensor ON.
  3. Confirm that the sensor is active.
