Filament Maker X10 – Fine-Tuning the Extrusion
Learn how to guide the extruded material through the cooling path and stabilize the filament before spooling.
Only proceed once the initial extrusion has remained stable for at least 5 minutes.
Step 1 – Remove the Extrusion Bib
Once the initial extrusion is stable, remove the extrusion bib.
Place the cooling path/conveyor belt into the extrusion position using its magnetic connectors.
See Cooling Path Installation for installation instructions.
Step 2 – Start the Puller Wheels
Start the puller wheels.
This powers the conveyor belt and allows the extruded material to be transported through the cooling path.
Step 3 – Guide the Material Onto the Conveyor
Carefully guide the extruded material onto the conveyor belt.
Do not pull excessively on the filament.
Make sure that:
- The conveyor bracket is in the vertical position.
- The material is guided through the filament sensor.
- The material is resting correctly on the conveyor belt.
⚠️ Hot material: The extruded material and nozzle may be extremely hot. Use appropriate protective equipment and suitable tools when handling material near the extrusion area.
Step 4 – Close the Conveyor Bracket
Close the conveyor bracket.
The conveyor belt will guide the material toward the conveyor wheel.
Step 5 – Monitor Conveyor Speed
The conveyor system automatically adjusts its speed during extrusion.
Continue monitoring the material puller speed on the machine display.
Step 6 – Stabilize the Extrusion
Monitor the filament as it travels across the conveyor belt.
Adjust the system parameters as required until the extrusion is constant and stable for at least 5 minutes.
💡 Tip: Avoid making rapid or unnecessary adjustments. Give the extrusion system enough time to respond to parameter changes.
Allow the Machine Time to Respond
Changes to extrusion parameters may take up to 30 minutes to fully affect the extrusion process.
After making an adjustment:
- Allow sufficient time for the extrusion to respond.
- Monitor the filament carefully.
- Evaluate the result.
- Make additional adjustments only when necessary.
💡 Tip: Avoid making several parameter changes at once. Make one adjustment at a time so you can understand its effect on the extrusion process.
Monitor the Extrusion
After making an adjustment, look for:
- Changes in filament diameter.
- Changes in extrusion stability.
- Irregular extrusion.
- Signs of clogging.
- Changes in filament appearance.
Allow the process to stabilize before making another adjustment.
