Firmware release notes for the Filament Maker TWO

A historical overview of official released updates added to the Filament Maker TWO firmware.

The release notes below summarize the details of every release for the Filament Maker TWO so far. Please see our dedicated article how to update the Firmware on the Filament Maker TWO.

Firmware interface overview

With each firmware update, the user interface or settings might change or move around. Learn how to use the touchscreen interface of the Filament Maker TWO.

Firmware version 0.3.0 - 30th of October 2025

General Improvements

  • Extrusion process control redesigned: More integrated workflow; user interface updated for clarity and easier operation.
  • Automatic screw start: By default, the screw now starts automatically once heaters reach setpoints.
If the screw is not started within 5 minutes, heaters shut down automatically to prevent material degradation.

Extrusion & Performance

  • Improved filament sensor accuracy and a simplified calibration process (no transparent rod required).
  • New torque visualization interface to monitor and adjust motor load.
  • Automatic extrusion stop when hopper is removed (previously resumed automatically).
  • Enhanced motor stall detection and minor heater control optimizations.
  • Smoother puller operation when automatic speed control is disabled.
  • Independent heater control: Setting a heater to 0 no longer stops the entire extrusion process.

User Interface

  • Updated design and icons for a more intuitive dashboard.
  • New calibration web interface with better guidance and feedback.
  • Individual filament diameter display for left, middle, and right sensors.
  • System menu now shows connected motor encoders.
  • Several small UI fixes for responsiveness, navigation, and preset handling.

Safety & Error Handling

  • New “Safe Mode”: In case of critical errors, all hardware shuts down cleanly to prevent damage.
  • Heaters and mains relays now switch together for added safety.
  • Improved thermocouple error handling: retries before safe shutdown.
  • Automatic log saving after system updates or fatal errors (retrievable via USB).
  • Better error sorting and alert handling in the UI.
  • Extended startup time to prevent watchdog shutdowns.

Other Updates

  • Presets: Default presets are now read-only, but users can create custom copies.
  • Heater numbering standardized (1-based instead of 0-based).
  • Minor internal fixes (race conditions, improved ADC readings, and reliability improvements).
  • No longer display unnecessary warnings from harmless IR camera errors.

Firmware version 0.2.3 - 13th of August 2025

Important fixes:

  • In some cases when an update failed or was interrupted, the system could get into a broken state showing a blue screen. If this happens, the system will now recover when restarted.
  • When a fatal error within a go routine would occur the API process would become unavailable, resulting in a white screen. With this change, the API will still be available to report what error occurred in a safe way and shutdown the hardware (heaters, screw).
  • Network configuration could not be changed because the needed dropdown was not displayed.
  • Spamming of thermocouple notifications into user friendly notifications.

New features

  • Hostname will now align with the serial number of the machine.
  • Enable StealthChop for screw and pullers which results in less noise while using.
  • User friendly IRCamera alert added.

Firmware version 0.2.2 - 19th of June 2025

This version introduces a hardware compatibility update for the latest electronics boards.
Note: Updating from version 0.2.1 to this release is optional, as both versions offer equivalent functionality.

Firmware version 0.2.1 - 3rd of June 2025

Filament presets: Filament extruder presets can now be saved, loaded and reconfigured! This includes:

  • Temperatures of all heating zones
  • RPM of the extrusion screw
  • Puller wheel speed and finetuning
  • Filament and hopper cooling settings
  • Tensioner setting
The presets can be saved directly from the extruder configuration menu, and after saving can be found in the 'settings menu' of the machine.
  • Save your successful machine parameters directly from the extruder configuration menu.
  • Load the configuration when changing between experiments to ensure reliable results
  • Duplicate, adjust or delete existing material extrusion presets as you need.

Spooling presets: The Filament Maker TWO is designed to work with all types of spools that fit the spool holder and the spool bay of the Filament Maker TWO. The machine can now save the dimensions of the currently installed spool, to easily swap between different type and sizes:

  • Save the spool size for later use, from 1kg up to 3kg material spools.
  • Load the spool configuration, to allow the system to spool to the correct dimensions automatically.
  • Duplicate, adjust or delete existing spool dimensions through the settings menu.

User experience improvements: We are continuously improving our user interface:

  • The heaters can now be turned "ON/OFF" with a single switch from the extruder configuration menu. This allows the heaters to remain on the setpoint as provided by the user or filament preset, while being able to turn off all heaters.
  • "Labels" for the machine interface have been updated for improved readability:
    • "Spooling" > "Start Spooling", to clearly indicate the button as an action.
    •  "Diameter control active" > "Automatic diameter control", to clarify this toggles the automation control.

Preserve settings after shutdown: The Filament Maker TWO preserves the last parameters set by the user or filament presets. This ensures the machine will reflect the last settings before turning it off, allowing to continue a previous extrusion experiment after rebooting the machine.

Firmware version 0.1.29 - 25th of March 2025

Improved Interface: We’ve added new sliders, and toggle buttons to make navigating the machine easier and faster. Input the temperatures directly through the keypad on the display, toggle the hopper cooling and filament cooling fans with simple sliders, and more!

UI redesign: Some settings may have moved around since the last update. All material diameter control settings have moved to the 'puller wheel speed' settings. The 'gear icon' allows to open the settings for ease of access!

Filament Roundness: The data captures and processed by the filament sensor, is now represented as a roundness up to 100% (perfectly round) filament. This data is reflected in the Influx environment to accurately identify your filament quality!

Filament Infrared temperatures: The sensor of the Filament Maker TWO is capable of more than measuring filament diameter and roundness!

  • The temperature of the filament passing through the sensor is monitored and can be shown on the main interface of the machine. The data can help identify material that's still too warm before moving through the puller wheel!
  • The temperature of the filament passing through the sensor is logged in the InfluxDB application on your PC. Extrude filament, examine the temperatures and diagnose your temperature and cooling settings efficiently!

Customizable Spool Options: Now you can configure all your spool dimensions in a convenient way, to ensure the perfect spooled filament with the Filament Maker TWO. You can find this feature in the 'Machine settings' panel, under 'spooling presets'. Just measure your spool, fill in the details, and you're ready to go!

Fan Control Simplified: Fan controls are now located on the analytics page, where you can monitor and adjust in real time. Both the hopper cooling fan and the material cooling fans in the extrusion area can be controlled with a swipe of your finger!

Improved Security: Upgrades to connection protocols and data writing safeguards keep your machine secure.

User controlled firmware updates: Firmware updates ready to be installed, can now be started through the 'Machine settings > System' menu. This is a preparation for 'Over The Air' (OTA) updates of the machines. When using a USB update, this section also displays the update progress!

System Stability: Behind-the-scenes improvements ensure smoother, more reliable performance.
