Routine Cleaning and Inspection

Regular cleaning and inspection helps prevent polymer residue, dust, and contamination from affecting the operation of the Filament Maker X10.

This article covers routine cleaning of the extrusion area, cooling fans, nozzle, nozzle cover, and Filament Sensor.

⚠️ Safety: Always switch the Filament Maker X10 OFF and allow hot components to cool completely before performing cleaning procedures.

Clean the Extrusion Area

The extrusion area should be cleaned regularly to prevent polymer residue and dust from accumulating around the extrusion components.

Step 1 – Switch Off and Cool Down

  1. Turn OFF the Filament Maker X10.
  2. Allow the extrusion area to cool completely before continuing.

🔥 Warning: Hot polymer and machine components can cause serious burns. Do not begin cleaning until the area is cool and safe to access.

Step 2 – Remove Filament

Remove any remaining filament from the extrusion area.

If necessary, carefully cut away remaining filament using a clean, sharp tool such as pliers.

Step 3 – Clean Polymer Residue and Dust

Use a soft, non-abrasive microfiber cloth and a chemical- and lotion-free cleaning solution to remove:

  • Polymer residue
  • Dust
  • Other contamination from the extrusion area

Clean accessible components carefully and avoid damaging cables, sensors, or other machine parts.

Step 4 – Inspect the Cooling Fans

Visually inspect the cooling fans and check that they are free from debris.

If debris is present, carefully remove it using a soft brush.

Keeping the fans clean helps maintain proper airflow and cooling performance.

Inspect the Nozzle and Nozzle Cover

The nozzle and nozzle cover should be visually inspected regularly for residue, wear, clogging, or heat damage.

Step 1 – Switch Off and Cool Down

Turn OFF the Filament Maker X10 and allow the extrusion area to cool completely.

Step 2 – Remove the Front Panel

Remove the 4 screws securing the front panel.

Step 3 – Remove the Nozzle Plate

Slide the nozzle plate out of the machine.

Step 4 – Inspect the Nozzle Cover

Remove the nozzle cover and inspect it for:

  • Visible damage
  • Excessive polymer residue
  • Signs of wear
  • Heat damage

If the nozzle cover is worn or damaged, replace it according to Configuration Changes.

Step 5 – Inspect the Nozzle

Visually inspect the extrusion nozzle for:

  • Excessive residue
  • Clogging
  • Polymer build-up
  • Signs of wear

Step 6 – Replace the Nozzle if Necessary

If the nozzle is worn, replace it to help prevent clogging and nozzle build-up.

For the replacement procedure, see Filament Maker X10 – Nozzle Replacement.

Clean the Filament Sensor

The Filament Sensor is an open system and can be exposed to dust and polymer residue during operation.

The sensor only requires cleaning when the sensor calibration procedure fails, unless cleaning is otherwise required.

Before cleaning the sensor, first attempt the calibration procedure.

If calibration fails, follow the cleaning procedure below.

Step 1 – Switch Off and Cool Down

  1. Turn OFF the Filament Maker X10.
  2. Allow the extrusion area to cool completely before accessing the sensor.

Step 2 – Remove the Cover Plate

Carefully unscrew and remove the cover plate to gain access to the Filament Sensor.

Step 3 – Inspect and Clean the Mirrors

Check the sensor mirrors for dust, residue, or other contamination.

If they are dirty, gently clean them using:

  • A soft, non-abrasive microfiber cloth
  • A chemical- and lotion-free cleaning solution

Take care not to scratch or damage the mirrors.

Step 4 – Check the Backlight

Inspect the backlight and verify that it is:

  • Clean
  • Functioning correctly
  • Free from contamination that could affect sensor performance

If necessary, carefully clean the backlight.

💡 Tip: After cleaning, repeat the Filament Sensor calibration procedure to verify that the sensor is operating correctly.

Optional Internal Cleaning

The Filament Maker X10 screw can be completely removed to provide access for internal cleaning of the extrusion system.

This procedure is optional and is not considered part of the standard maintenance schedule.

A dedicated cleaning kit is required and must be purchased separately.

For the complete procedure and information about the cleaning kit, see Screw Removal and Cleaning.

⚠️ Important: Do not remove the extrusion screw as part of routine maintenance unless the procedure is specifically required. Follow the dedicated instructions and use the appropriate cleaning kit.
