Replace the thermistor of the GP20 granulator

Step-by-step documentation to replace the thermistor of the granulator unit.

Overview

Medium

30 minutes

The Granulator sensor of the GP20 Shredder Hybrid is located at the back of the granulator unit. It measures the temperature to prevent overheating of the rotor during operation.

Tools required

  • 5mm hex key
  • 3mm hex key/screwdriver
  • 14mm wrench

Parts required

  • Thermistor sensor (granulator)

Preparation

  1. Turn off the GP20 and remove both power cords from the Granulator and Shredder control box.
  2. Disconnect and remove the hopper, see article for detailed instructions.
  3. Remove the container from the machine, see article for detailed instructions.
  4. Remove the shredder unit and control box from the machine. Follow the instructions from this article in reverse order, or follow the summarized steps below:
    1. Unscrew the three nuts from the positioning studs and remove the screws.
    2. Lift the Shredder unit and control box from the machine.

The Shredder unit and control box are heavy, always lift with two persons.

Your GP20 Granulator should now be accessible from the top as in the photo below.

Open the granulator

  • Unscrew the four - 3mm hex screws - from the metal plate attached to the granulator rotor.
  • Unscrew the four - 5mm hex screws from the metal plate attached to the granulator rotor.
  • Unscrew both threaded positioning studs. Insert a 5mm hex key from the bottom into the screw, loosen the stud by turning the rubber by hand.

Remove the thermistor

  • The thermistor is screwed into the metal block of the granulator unit. Unscrew it from the granulator housing. If the thermistor is too tight, use a wrench to loosen it first.

  • The thermistor connector is connected below the safety switch connections. Unplug it carefully from the connector board. The connector might be hard to reach, use tweezers, pliers or any tools to reach it if required.
Note: Ensure to not touch the electronics board with metal and prevent putting too much force on it.

  • Connect the replacement thermistor to the same port the old sensor was connected to, and screw the other side into the granulator unit. The steps above can be followed in reverse order.

(Optional) Test the standalone granulator

The granulator unit can be tested without re-installation of the metal plate or Shredder unit, to prevent unnecessary work when the issue remains. To test the machine, follow the steps below:

  1. Install the hopper directly on top of the granulator, and the container below it.
  2. Install the hopper data cable and granulator communication cable.
  3. Reconnect the power cable and turn on the machine.
  4. The granulator will trigger a "standalone mode", accept it. If the temperature error is gone, the thermistor has been installed correctly.
  5. Turn off the machine and disconnect the power cable. Remove the hopper, container and all data cables to continue.

Reinstall the metal plate and shredder

  1. Reinstall the metal plate, screwing back the screws in reverse order as listed in the chapter "Open the Granulator"
  2. Carefully place the Shredder unit back on the machine, while aligning it carefully on the positioning studs.

Note:

When placing the shredder unit, ensure to align it precisely and check if all connectors and safety switches insert smoothly.

Safety-positioning

Final connection

When the shredder is in place and all safety switches and locks are in place, continue with all cables:

  • Connect the hopper communication cable
  • Connect the Shredder unit and Granulator unit cables.
  • Connect the Shredder and Granulator communication cable, located near the power buttons, to ensure the machines understand they're operating together.
  • Reconnect both power cables and turn on the machines.
